I built my friend Chad a Gaming PC! Mini-ITX but with top-class specs: a Ryzen 5600X + RTX 3080 in the new Phanteks Evolv Shift 2 case. Here's the build!

I have built a few PCs where there was no choice but to mount the rad of the aio below the block. Those coolers outlasted the life of the pc. Pump below rad is the best choice but there is no law saying all AIOs mounted tte other way will fail.

Was wondering why people kept saying his aio would fail, when they are generally pretty reliable these days. Then I saw where he mounted the radiator in relation to the pump, and was like "ah" lol

But do you have the radiator mounted below the pump lol. Since you've had it for 6 years, I know the answer is no. Having the radiator completely below the pump, means that as the coolant evaporates over time, ALL of the air will end up trapped in the pump.

Make note folks, judging based on a recent poll from Paul it seems that the chad PC was the first experimental group to validate Steve from GN's AIO video 3 months with the radiator below the pump block and it died...

16:08 I know its an old video, but a $2 fan grille would be perfect for keeping those PSU cables out of the fan blades. You can find them painted black to match.

Just got my H80i V2. The AM4 sticker is located on the back near the compatibility list, is yellow colored, and slightly bigger than the other font on the box. Should be easy to tell if you're checking these in store. There's also some paperwork in the box itself detailing which holes to use for the AM4 format.

but you probably picked the worst AIO to use in that case. The thermals aren't good enough to warrant the use of that AIO. Plenty of better solutions.

Be happy that you didn't build in the original evolv shift. I started with the original and just recently swapped it for the evolv shift 2, and nearly ALL my concerns were fixed in the evolv shift 2 (The only concern is the riser cable being 3.0 but I can't seem to find any 4.0 riser cables on the internet so I am just under the assumption that they don't exist)

Last year I did a build in Phanteks Evolv Shift Glass case. Asus Z390-I + 9900k + 2080ti + 3x120 RAD fully water cooled with EKWB. It was crammed in there. One of the most fun pc builds I've ever had.

@Paul's Hardware Hello Paul, I found this video really helpful as I’m planning on doing my first build soon & the parts that I’ve chosen are almost identical, could you recommend to me a good reliable (preferably titanium or platinum) power supply that would be sufficient for this build? Would you improve/add anything to this build? Also, I should mention that I'm not planning on overclocking the GPU or CPU in the future. Any advice would be much appreciated! Is it just me or does that compact form-factor feel too air-flow claustrophobic? It looks cool and I wish I could use it but I've learned my lesson and always get 4 RAM slot boards. I also test various SDI video capture cards so I need the space, plus having more open space in the case makes airflow much more manageable. LED components are like adding plastic and loud mufflers to a crap car to "make it go faster". I wish this trend would burn itself out already.

On my Shift 2 Air build I cut the top 2.5 SSD tray section out with a grinder to put another fan, ordered two 20mm rads and made a custom rigid loop in it. I then used 2, 15mm noctua, fans between the face plate and the frame, mounted the radiator on the inside, and did the same on the bottom where I drilled exit ports for the second radiator. Only issue I have is the riser cables... Mine touches the back of my MB and I hate it.... I don't want solder to penetrate the cable and fry my card...

Nice build Paul. I've been curious about using a case like this in the past but have been concerned about the placement of the pump of the AIO. Have you had issues with air getting trapped in the pump with it being the highest part of the AIO system?

That placement of the AIO tubes gave me anxiety, lol. Mesh side panel is an EXCELLENT idea, they should make mid towers with those, too. Also, I noticed that the PSU fan wasn't moving. Still, I love this build.

WOuld also love to see the total system power consumption as i'm looking for this exact build from CLX, but they don't have the 750W SFX PSU. Reddit's PC building subs say that 650W should be sufficient, but it would be great to get the total power pulled from this exact build since you have it here.

Love the look of this chassis! Have placed an order for the Shift 2 TG Black and looking forward to building in it. A bit worried about how much air the GPU will get but I think TG looks much better than mesh! Phanteks really do build the best cases!

My last pc build was maybe 2007, I’ve just used work computers since. When did we stop using optical drives!? I still haven’t gotten over the loss of the 5.5” floppy. I’m a millennial and also an IT systems analyst but man do I feel old when looking into building a new computer. I remember when 512mb ram was insane and buying a 256mb video card. I’m just surprised we aren’t on DDR18 ram yet.

For the lower AIO I think you want a fan guard so cables dont get sucked in. I have a SilverStone SST-FF121B that would do the trick for example.

My only gripe with the design is that there is no way to mount radiators onto the side panels. Imagine dual 240`s (or 360s?) on there, plus the two 120s and that last one under it all. That would be an absolute beast ; ~:/

Excellent video...VERY helpful...thank you for posting...I would buy the case if it had aluminum perforated side panels instead of the perforated cloth...glass is not an option as I am looking to install the 5900X...disappointing but informative nonetheless.

Honestly, his old PC is still very capable, just needs a GPU upgrade and an SSD if it didn't have one. Even the GPU is still decent for 1080p gaming, performs on par with a 1650 (non-S).

i would have ran a zip tie through the vent hole by the tubes to pull them in a bit so they didnt touch the side panel

New products sold out? Close to Christmas. NO WAY. THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE!!!!! (extreme sarcasm) Seriously though. New products selling out almost instantly has always been a thing. Even back to the dawn of computing.... Hell, I can remember the Nintendo selling out during Christmas. Same with Super Nintendo, PlayStation, etc. Even my mother being the LAST PERSON in line at Sears to get a PlayStation, the women after was told "sorry sold out." Its always been this way. It will ALWAYS be this way. Not to mention, year over year more people are getting into gaming and even pc gaming.... so there are more people than ever building computing. There are 8 billion people in the world. Half of them are children yeah? 4 billion adults. Half of those are living in a 3rd world country who can't afford technology like India (where cell phones are far more popular) so now down to 2 billion people. Then half of that probably don't buy things when they are brand new anyway, so now we are down to 1 billion people. Half of those probably cannot afford these higher end parts, so now down to 500 million. That's a fuck-ton of people. And you expect there to be stock to cover all of them? You are INSANE if you believe that. The PlayStation 5 is now the top selling Sony console EVER. AKA more people more than ever are buying technology. And its only going to grow over time.... year over year growth is going to increase. Now obviously once people HAVE these products, it will seem like there is more in stock because demand wont be as high.... I feel like the people CRYING about stock, are either entitled little shits who need to go outside and live a real life, or simply are too young to understand how new releases work (have always worked, and will always work)

Shouldn't you use separate power cables for GPU? Also, wont air get trapped in the AIO pump with radiator mounted like that?

This case definitely doesn't take AIO orientation into account. I feel like this case might be better suited for low profile air cooling. Regardless, still a sweet build.

Hello Paul, let me start off by saying that's a lovely build 😀. Can I ask i am currently, well, trying to a build a similar PC but I have 3200mhz of DDR4 ram rather than 3600mhz, will it make a huge difference with that CPU? Thank you.

Thanks for this! I have the first version and just got the mesh side panels (1 year after buying it). The RGB ram looks amazing. I wouldn’t only want a little bit of RGB and that looks like the best way to do it

I have the first gen of this case, and it was a biotch to fit a water-cooled 1080ti and the same CPU cooler in it as well as all my rgb stuff, but it actually git quite nicely after some outside the box thinking. really glad to see they stuck with their product and genuinely improved it in a 2nd version without losing touch with what made it look good and a great case.
